About Virology
The Stanford Clinical Virology Lab offers a broad range of molecular and serologic diagnostic test procedures for the diagnosis of viral and sexually transmitted infections. Virology has implemented a broad selection of laboratory-developed assays to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of viral infectious diseases important to immunocompromised, chemotherapy, transplant, prenatal, and HIV patients.

Our Faculty
Stanford Clinical Virology provides superior technical expertise with performing viral diagnostic studies for detecting emerging viral infectious disease, for detecting the presence of viruses in specimen types not commonly performed in other clinical laboratories, and for the serologic determination of the immune response to clinically important viruses. Our service utilizes molecular diagnosis of viral infections that provide superior sensitivity and rapid turnaround times compared with conventional diagnostic methods and play a critical role in testing protocols for managing viral infections.
Respiratory Pathogen Testing
The Stanford Diagnostic Virology laboratory offers full-scale respiratory pathogen testing for the most common respiratory viruses including the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
HPV and Sexual Transmitted Diseases
Our laboratory identifies high risk HPV part of cervical cancer screening triage and the identification of the genital tract pathogens Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis. We also offer testing for Trichomonas Vaginalis.
HIV Genotyping and Resistance Testing
Stanford Virology was among the first diagnostic laboratories in the world to offer HIV genotyping and antiviral resistance testing and we continue to provide this important service to numerous patients and research clients.
Viral Load Monitoring
We offer monitoring of viral load in chronic disease (HIV, HCV, and HBV), and the quantitative assessment of viral infection/reactivation in transplant and other immunocompromised patients (CMV, EBV, and BK).
Zika, Chikungunya, Dengue
A multi-plex assay for the rapid detection of these viruses is offered for a variety of specimen types.
Viral Serology
Viral serologic testing monitors the immune system’s antibody response to viral antigen exposure, including both infection and immunization. Viral serologic testing is performed for: HIV, herpesvirus, Cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr, Mumps, measles and Varicella-Zoster viruses.
