Surgical Pathology
A Subspecialty Of Anatomic Pathology
About Surgical Pathology
Surgical pathology is the study of tissues removed from living patients during surgery to help diagnose a disease and determine a treatment plan. A surgical pathology examination includes a physical exam of the tissue with the naked eye, and an examination processed tissue under a microscope and may be supported by immunohistochemistry or other laboratory tests.
The pathologist's interpretation of a biopsy is the cornerstone of a patient’s treatment plan. It provides critical information such as determining if a tumor is benign or malignant, staging the extent of malignant disease, and pinpointing the activity of specific molecular pathways in the tumor. The surgical pathologist supports surgeons by determining if the entirety of a diseased area has been removed during surgery and provides information that guides for postoperative treatment.
Surgical pathologists also diagnose diseases other than cancer, including inflammatory, infectious, or idiopathic diseases of the skin and gastrointestinal tract.
