About Transfusion Services
Stanford’s Transfusion Medicine Service offers a full range of testing and blood products to support trauma, transplant, patients with chronic anemia and other hematologic issues for operating rooms, surgery centers, and infusion treatment areas across Stanford Healthcare and Stanford Children’s Health.

Our Faculty
Stanford’s Transfusion Medicine Service offers a full range of testing and blood products to patients at Stanford Healthcare and Stanford Children’s Health. Although many of our services are only available to Stanford patients, we do offer outside services through our human leukocyte antigen (HLA) lab and the Stanford Blood Center.
Testing Services
Stanford’s Transfusion Medicine offers a range of testing including blood typing, antibody screening, and blood product crossmatching.
Immunohematology Reference Lab
Our AABB accredited Immunohematology Reference Laboratory provides advance patient work-ups and complex antibody identification including:
- Autoantibody Identification
- Direct Antiglobulin Testing (DAT)
- Cold Agglutinin Screen/Titer
Blood Products
Transfusion Medicine provides a range of blood products to Stanford patients including:
- Red blood cell units
- Frozen red blood cells for rare phenotypes
- Autologous red blood cell units
- Platelet apheresis units
- HLA matched platelet units
- Leukocyte apheresis units
- Granulocytes
- Fresh frozen plasma units
- Liquid plasma units
Stanford’s Transfusion Services group doesn’t supply blood products outside of Stanford but the Stanford Blood Center offers these products to outside institutions.

Important: Stanford Transfusion services requires each specimen to have:
- Patient name, MRN, and date of birth
- A documented collection date & time
- Collector ID (such as initials).
Specimens without this information will be rejected.
