Ancillary Testing
Stanford’s Cardiovascular Pathology Service offers expert diagnosis for wet tissue and consult cases for cardiac and cardiac transplant cases. We evaluate the full range of cardiac biopsies with strong expertise in endomyocardial biopsies and tissue samples from cardiac valves, heart explants, aortas and different vessels including temporal arteries. The evaluation of these biopsies yields diagnoses of specific inflammatory, infiltrative, and familial myocardial disorders and cancerous and non-cancerous cardiac tumors. Cardiac pathology also plays an important role in the monitoring of heart transplant patients where it is used to identify possible rejection and other pathologies of heart allograft.
Consultative Opinions & Case Reviews
Stanford’s Cardiovascular Pathology Service offers consultative opinions on challenging cases submitted from outside of the Stanford network. These consultations can be utilized to offer expert opinion, answer specific questions or confirm diagnosis.
Primary Pathology Diagnosis
Stanford’s Cardiovascular Pathology Service performs gross and microscopic examination and reporting of wet tissue cases.
Consult Cases
To submit slides for case review, please fill out a Stanford requisition and include all slides, relevant reports, and ancillary testing materials and reports. If possible, please include a block, as it will greatly speed the finalization of the case should additional testing be necessary. Package all materials securely and send via a padded envelope.
Wet Tissue Specimens
All samples should be labeled with the patient information (name, DOB and one other unique identifier) and sealed in a biohazard bag. Please submit a signed Stanford requisition with each sample.
Please submit materials in proper transport media. Tissue samples (3-6 pieces) for routine diagnostic evaluation should be submitted in formalin, samples (1-3 pieces) for immunofluorescent microscopy should be submitted in saline, Michael’s or other comparable solutions, tissue for transmission electron microscopy (2-5) should be submitted in glutaraldehyde fixative.

Stanford Pathology offers a 3-year Anatomic Pathology residency and 4 year combination residencies in Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology and Anatomic Pathology/Neuropathology.
