Hematopathology
A Subspecialty Of Anatomic Pathology
About Hematopathology
Stanford’s Hematopathology Service provides diagnostic evaluation of blood, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, and hematolymphoid lesions in other sites, and includes faculty and staff with expertise in both anatomic and clinical pathology. The division's hematopathology consult service reviews a broad variety of challenging and often clinically urgent cases submitted by pathologists and oncologists from the U.S. and other countries.

Our Faculty
Ancillary Testing
Stanford’s Hematopathology service offer expert hematopathology consultation on histologic slides, blocks, and fresh tissue samples, including blood and bone marrow.
The faculty members of Stanford’s Hematopathology service are nationally and internationally recognized experts who provide timely and accurate diagnoses for a variety of hematolymphoid neoplasms as well as benign disorders. They hold deep expertise in both anatomic and clinical pathology and are actively engaged in translational research efforts to define the molecular bases of lymphomas and leukemias and define novel diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers. Our services include:
Consultative Opinions and Primary Diagnoses
Stanford Hematopathology offers fresh or fixed tissue consultation for the full range of hematopathology cases, including peripheral blood, bone marrow, lymph node, spleen and other organs. Our faculty have deep expertise in diagnosis of common and rare malignant and benign hematopoietic disorders. This service includes assignment of a hematopathology fellow to each case for individualized service.
Primary Diagnosis on Wet Tissue
Peripheral blood, bone marrow, and other fresh body fluid or tissue biopsy specimens may be submitted either for comprehensive evaluation or for pathologic diagnosis with specified ancillary studies including flow immunophenotyping, cytogenetic and molecular studies., When comprehensive evaluation of a case is requested, a Stanford hematopathologist will review the provided clinical history and slides to initiate the appropriate ancillary tests tailored to diagnostic and patient care needs, including flow cytometry, cytogenetics and/or molecular studies.
Slide Review Consult Cases
To submit slides for case review, please complete a Stanford requisition and include all slides, relevant reports, and related ancillary testing materials and reports. If possible, please include a block, as it will greatly speed the finalization of the case should additional testing be necessary. Package all materials securely and send via a padded envelope.
Flow Immunophenotyping
An optimal panel of antigens will be chosen under the guidance of a hematopathologist upon reviewing the clinical history and/or morphologic findings. Diagnostic flow cytometry immunophenotyping is available seven days a week and urgent results are quickly called to the ordering physician as a preliminary report. The Stanford Clinical Flow Cytometry Laboratory offers a comprehensive diagnostic test menu, including leukemia/lymphoma immunophenotyping, minimal residual disease monitoring assays, CD34+ stem cell quantitation, lymphocyte subset analysis, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobulinuria (PNH) screen, hereditary spherocytosis, and Sézary syndrome.

Ancillary Testing
Stanford’s Hematopathology Service relies heavily on ancillary testing to render a comprehensive diagnosis. Our affiliated labs offer state of the art processing and interpretation of samples that contribute to our final comprehensive diagnosis.
Our immunohistochemistry laboratory offers a wide range of immunostains and in-situ hybridization assays. Hematopathology consultants use these diagnostic procedures selectively, based on clinical and morphologic indications.
We perform next generation sequencing studies for T- and B-cell clonality and hematolymphoid malignancy-associated somatic mutations, and PCR for gene rearrangements.
Our cytogenetics lab performs both karyotyping and specialized studies including fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to diagnose a variety of chromosomal abnormalities.
Stanford’s Flow Cytometry laboratory offers a full range of diagnostic tests for evaluating hematolymphoid disorders, as well as minimal residual disease and other specialized testing.
Red Blood Cell Special Studies
The RBC Special Studies Laboratory offers testing for hereditary causes of hemolytic anemia. Some of the enzyme studies are also useful in the diagnosis of red cell aplasia in children and immunodeficiency syndromes.
