Ancillary Testing
Stanford Neuropathology Service provides a full range of expert diagnostic and consultation services for neurosurgical specimens and evaluation of post mortem brains. Our board-certified Neuropathologists also offer deep expertise in pathology of muscle and nerve biopsies.
Primary Pathology Diagnosis
Stanford’s Neuropathology Service performs gross and microscopic examination and reporting of wet tissue cases. We evaluate all neurology cases originating from Stanford Healthcare and Stanford Children’s Health as well as cases submitted by outside clinicians for expert opinion.
Consultative Opinions & Case Reviews
Neuropathology Service offers consultative opinions on challenging cases submitted from outside of the Stanford network. These consultations can be utilized to offer expert opinion, answer specific questions or confirm diagnosis.
Muscle and Nerve Biopsies
Neuropathology Service offers deep expertise in the area of muscle and nerve biopsies, including inflammatory, congenital and metabolic and storage disorders, among others.
Specimen Collection for muscle and nerve specimens requires special handling. Please see our collection guide for detailed information.
Brain Autopsy
Post-mortem brains are assessed for dementias, prion diseases and other neurodegenerative disorders. Examination of brain tissue after death is currently the only definitive way to diagnose the specific neurodegenerative disorder of an individual. The information obtained through autopsy provides family members with invaluable family medical history information and allows better management of hereditary neurogenerative disorders for surviving family members.
Slide Review Consult Cases
To submit slides for case review, please fill out a Stanford requisition and include all slides, relevant reports, and ancillary testing materials and reports. If possible, please include a block, as it will greatly speed the finalization of the case should additional testing be necessary. Package all materials securely and send via a padded envelope.
Wet Tissue Specimens
Autopsy brains: Ship after at least two weeks of immersion formalin fixation. Remove excess formalin and wrap the brain in formalin-moistened towels, place in plastic bags, and a sealed Styrofoam shipping container. All samples should be labeled with the patient information (name, DOB and one other unique identifier) and sealed in a biohazard bag. Please submit a signed Stanford requisition with each sample.
Muscle and Nerve Biopsies
Muscle and nerve biopsies require special handling. Please notify the Neuropathology service prior to performing a biopsy.
Biopsies should be shipped or delivered via courier to:
Stanford Anatomic Pathology
Attn: Neuropathology Lab
3375 Hillview Avenue
Palo Alto, CA 94304
