Flow Cytometry
A Diagnostic Modality Supporting Anatomic Pathology
About Flow Cytometry
Flow Cytometry is a technique that utilizes fluorescence or light scatter to detect and measure physical properties and molecules on a single cell level. This technology is used for a wide variety of clinical applications including detection and characterization of various hematolymphoid cancers such as leukemia and lymphomas, detection of biomarkers for immunotherapy, and enumeration of different cells of interest including stem cells and lymphocyte subsets.

Our Faculty
The Stanford Clinical Flow Cytometry Laboratory offers a comprehensive diagnostic test menu, including leukemia/lymphoma immunophenotyping, minimal residual disease monitoring assays, CD34+ stem cell quantitation, lymphocyte subset analysis, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobulinuria (PNH) screen, hereditary spherocytosis, and Sézary syndrome.
The most common indications for immunophenotyping include unexplained cytopenias or workup of patients with hematologic neoplasms such as acute leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, plasma cell neoplasms, and myeloid neoplasms involving the peripheral blood, bone marrow, body fluids or tissue biopsies.
This assay is not recommended for evaluation of non-hematologic malignancies and has limited utility in certain myeloproliferative neoplasms or classic Hodgkin lymphoma. An optimal panel of antigens will be chosen under the guidance of a hematopathologist upon reviewing the clinical history and/or morphologic findings.
