About Stanford Blood Center
Stanford Blood Center is an independent community blood center and leader in transplantation and transfusion medicine.

Research
Stanford Blood Center was created within the Department of Pathology at Stanford University School of Medicine in 1978 to meet the increasingly large and complex transfusion needs of Stanford Health Care and Lucile Salter Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford to perform research and teaching. Today, we are an independent community blood center dedicated to leading the fields of transfusion and transplantation medicine by advancing science and technology, providing hope for the future by teaching the medical leaders of tomorrow, and enhancing lives by connecting donors to patients every day. Though no longer part of Stanford University, we remain an integral part of Stanford Medicine.
Over time, SBC has developed a large whole blood, apheresis and special donations blood collection program in response to the growing needs of our partner hospitals. Our Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics Laboratory (HLA Lab) continues to provide support for some of the most complex transfusion and transplantation services. And additional lab teams work with our Special Donations and Research Customer Relations teams to provide a wide array of specialized research products for external clients who are pioneering incredible work in disease detection, innovative treatment options and more.

As a community blood center, responding to the needs of local patients is Stanford Blood Center’s top priority.
In order to support all the patients in our community who require life-saving blood products, SBC must collect about 200 units (pints) of blood every day. Our ability to collect these products is dependent upon the generosity of blood donors who, with one donation, can save up to three lives.
These blood donations are used for a wide range of patient and community services. Your blood donation could be used for:
- a transfusion for someone with a life-threatening condition such as sickle-cell anemia;
- emergency treatment for a major trauma case;
- a safe solid organ or bone marrow transplant procedure;
- a second chance at life for a child in critical condition;
- advanced surgical options for a high-risk patient;
- stronger immunity for a cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy;
- a medical safety net in the event of an active shooter or other disaster.
Additionally, in order to maximize the impact of the donated blood products, key components of blood (such as white cells, which are not typically used in transfusions), are preserved and prepared into products for groundbreaking research initiatives. So, when you donate with SBC, you aren’t just saving lives of patients today; you could also be part of a cure for the patients of tomorrow.
