Ancillary Testing

Stanford’s Genitourinary Pathology Service offers expert diagnosis for wet tissue and consult cases in neoplastic kidney diseases as well as diseases of the prostate, bladder, ureter, urethra, testis, and penis. We provide a full range of diagnostic services, including interpretation of biopsies and comprehensive evaluations of surgical resections with an aim toward providing information regarding possible additional therapy and overall prognosis.

Our faculty has an in-depth understanding of the clinical management of diseases of the urinary and male genital tracts and emphasizes clinical pathologic correlations when providing consultations.

Our genitourinary team has specific expertise in the following areas:

  • Kidney neoplasms
  • Urinary bladder pathology
  • Prostate pathology
  • Testicular pathology
  • Penile pathology

Consultative Opinions & Case Reviews

Stanford’s Genitourinary Pathology program offers consultative opinions on challenging cases submitted from outside of the Stanford network. These consultations can be utilized to offer expert opinion, answer specific questions or confirm diagnosis. This service includes assignment of a specialty pathology fellow to each case for individualized service.

Primary Pathology Diagnosis

Stanford’s Genitourinary Pathology Service performs gross and microscopic examination and reporting of wet tissue cases.

Consult Cases

To submit slides for case review, please fill out a Stanford requisition and include all slides, relevant reports, and ancillary testing materials and reports. If possible, please include a paraffin block, as it will greatly speed the finalization of the case should additional testing be necessary. Package all materials securely and send via a padded envelope.

Wet Tissue Specimens

Please submit materials in proper transport media. All samples should be labeled with the patient information (name, DOB and one other unique identifier) and sealed in a biohazard bag.

Samples should be shipped or delivered via courier to:
