About Neuropathology
Neuropathology is the practice of pathology concerned with evaluating specimens from the central and peripheral nervous systems for both neoplastic and non-neoplastic disorders.

Ancillary Testing
Stanford Neuropathology Service provides a full range of expert diagnostic and consultation services for neurosurgical specimens and evaluation of post mortem brains. Our board-certified Neuropathologists also offer deep expertise in pathology of muscle and nerve biopsies.
Primary Pathology Diagnosis
Stanford’s Neuropathology Service performs gross and microscopic examination and reporting of wet tissue cases. We evaluate all neurology cases originating from Stanford Healthcare and Stanford Children’s Health as well as cases submitted by outside clinicians for expert opinion.
Consultative Opinions & Case Reviews
Neuropathology Service offers consultative opinions on challenging cases submitted from outside of the Stanford network. These consultations can be utilized to offer expert opinion, answer specific questions or confirm diagnosis.
Muscle and Nerve Biopsies
Neuropathology Service offers deep expertise in the area of muscle and nerve biopsies, including inflammatory, congenital and metabolic and storage disorders, among others.
Specimen Collection for muscle and nerve specimens requires special handling. Please see our collection guide for detailed information.
Brain Autopsy
Post-mortem brains are assessed for dementias, prion diseases and other neurodegenerative disorders. Examination of brain tissue after death is currently the only definitive way to diagnose the specific neurodegenerative disorder of an individual. The information obtained through autopsy provides family members with invaluable family medical history information and allows better management of hereditary neurogenerative disorders for surviving family members.
All specimens and additional paperwork must be labeled with:
- A minimum of 2 patient identifiers (first and last name, date of birth, medical record number, pathology case ID)
- Specimen type and anatomic site
Consult Cases
To submit slides for case review, the following materials are required:
- Fully completed Stanford Neuropathology requisition form, including the requesting provider’s full name and NPI.
- Pathology report (final or preliminary).
- Glass slides and/or FFPE block.
- Ancillary testing results or materials.
- Patient demographics (name, DOB, address, phone), so Epic Care Everywhere can be activated, if applicable.
For cases with paraffin-embedded tissue, providing unstained slides or the paraffin block will expedite the work-up for ancillary studies.
Autopsy Brains
To submit for processing and review, the following materials are required:
- Fully completed Stanford Neuropathology requisition form, including the requesting provider’s full name and NPI.
- Patient demographics (name, DOB, address, phone), so Epic Care Everywhere can be activated, if applicable.
- Submit specimens after at least two weeks of formalin fixation. Remove excess formalin and wrap the brain in formalin-moistened towels, place in biohazard bag, seal closed and place in Styrofoam shipping container.
Consults and autopsy brains should be shipped or delivered via courier to:

Fresh Muscle/Nerve

Shipping Guidelines
Package all materials securely according to the guidelines below and send via a padded envelope.
Glass slides: Package slides securely in plastic containers with bubble wrap to prevent glass breakage or damage in transit. Do not transport slides in cardboard folders. Stanford is not responsible for any glass slide damage in transport to our labs.
Paraffin blocks: Include ice packs to prevent wax melting. Stanford is not responsible for any tissue damage caused by extreme weather in transport to our labs.
Fresh/Fixed tissue: Seal specimen container closed. Place in biohazard bag and seal it closed. Ship specimen at appropriate temperature.
